You made me hungry! My Mother made miso soup for me, but she never made it with mochi. We ate mochi toasted, dipped in soy sauce, and wrapped in nori. Mom like mochi with kinako, but I liked it better toasted.
The return of nice food photos! Hoorray!
but what is mizo?
szelsofa,
Not Lucy, but miso is fermented soybean paste. It looks like nut butters but is not oily. It can be light colored, almost sweet or it can be dark brown and very salty depending on how long it ferments.
Miso soup begins with dashi. Dashi is a fish stock made with sea vegetable (konbo) and dried fish (bonito flakes, also called katsuobushi). Some Japanese make dashi with dried sardines (iroko, niboshi) instead. You can eat miso soup plain or you can add vegetables, seafood, or rice cakes. It's very delicious.
Lucy,
I am now hungry for miso soup! I bought some kinako but have not tasted it yet.
