Fire engines SHOULD be RED, for God's sake! (just kidding :)) - but they are red here in Hungary, too! Being them red is like the icecream being cold and flowers smelling nice and so on... It is a must. I totally see you son's point, Lucy.

Much like that Mercedes Benz safety study in the early 80's, yellow fire engines are more visible than red ones.

So that's the likely reason.

Szélső Fa,
I think red's image is strong. Anyway I am afraid of fire and earthquake..

Rebecca,
Thank you. But I think yellow fire engines might be cool..

LanternLight,
In western countries, buses and trucks are made by Mercedes Benz.
I have ever seen them in Japan.

Oh wow - I never saw a yellow fire engine either!

But yes, apparently, lanternlight is correct - yellow is meant to be the safest colour vehicle to own!

They are usually red here too. But, some cities have yellow ones. I don't know why.

Same thing with police cars. Most cities have black and white police cars. But, some cities have white cars with blue (or some other color) stripes and letters.

I'm not sure why fire engines are red in Japan - they are red in the UK also.

I think it is maybe because red is a colour associated with danger and fire?
