Watermelon
He was just hitting a watermelon. In summer, children did this. This picture was taken 6 years ago in my older son's pre-school. They were boys, who were not my older son, wearing glasses. The other boy is my son, who just stood and watched.
Of courese they ate watermelons after this event.
Today, my younger son did it in his pre-school.

Is this is type of children's sport or game in Japan, or just a bit of random fun?
muse-ic
Children do it in summer sometimes in Japan, when they take events. They go to sea for summer camp of schools or groups. We don't do it with our family.
Children of this picture wore the glasses, but usulally we use a blindold.
aah...so it is a tradition?
thank you!
I think all Japanese know this way. We say "Suika wari". I'm not sure when it was started.
I'm sorry, but for me, it is not very appealing to destroy an otherwise edible fruit. You wrote the kids ate the melon afterwards and yet...
It is a strange tradition, indeed.
Szélső Fa,
I have not ever thought it. But,
after I read your comment, I thought " that(your opinion) makes a lot of sense."

Absolutely. It is very interesting and useful to see different cultures.
